September 2018 Game – Tropicana Golf & Country Club

IMG_2423

Following 4 late withdrawals and with other members away in Chiang Mai, 20 players teed off under clear skies at Tropicana Golf & Country Club. After a late switch we played East 1 and West, play commencing on schedule with a two- tee box start at 1-00pm, with EL PRES getting proceedings under way on West.

The course was in excellent condition with the greens running very fast.

IMG_2433

The earlier clear skies did not last and by 4 o’clock the distant rumbles of thunder could be heard. It seemed that we may have a reprieve as the rain held off, however our game was cut short just after 5 o’clock when the rain started and with lightning close by the siren sounded.  Tropicana has a policy that if play is suspended and it is still raining at 6 o’clock then the course will stay closed. With no break in the rain and the satellite plot showing no movement in the red zone, play was brought to a close at 5-45 pm.

Paul Geddes took some time during the rain break while sheltering in a tunnel to do a wonderful Austin Powers impression of trying to turn his buggy …… see the video here:

We adjourned to the nearby Pantai Seafood Restoran with all players arriving quite quickly.  With the committee fully occupied in checking the scorecards, the food was ordered by Paul Geddes who selected well.

EL PRES welcomed our 4 guests, Raymond Choo, guest of Pietro, Andy MacDonald, guest of Paul Geddes, Roland Steiner, guest of Enzo and Bernd Kaiser,  guest of Helmut Dicknoether. We look forward to seeing you all again at future events.

Results

The abandoned play required additional checking of score cards.  The result was determined by the score of the 13 common holes played by all players (holes 1 to 7 East 1 and Holes 1 to 6 on West).  Two players both scored 30 points on these holes : Enzo Filoni  was declared the winner (cut 5) beating Robert Frager (cut 2) on count back.  Helmut Dicknoether came in third place with 29 points (cut 1).

  • NTP winner #17 : Paul Geddes (4m 81 cm)
  • Longest drive #7 : Richard Rodwell 215 m.

Fines

Several players were fined for completing the longest drive score sheet on the par 3 hole #3 believing it was an NTP hole. It was deemed that their longest drive distances were all short of the Ladies Tee Box.

Several other players were fined for taking 4 or more putts on some of the greens.

Bernd was awarded a pink ball for a 5 putt on the first green.

Stuart Taylor was also fined for picking up on index 1 when he had a 4 inch putt for a 7 as he was not used to have 2 strokes on holes.   Remember next time, you will have 4 holes with double shots.

Moneybags had a fruitful day and collected 9 ladies tee box jugs.

More details on both the event and the charities will be sent to you in due course.

April 2017 Game – Tropicana Golf & Country Resort

20170419_130634Resiz

The April game was held at the beautiful Tropicana Golf & Country Resort. 27 players including a couple of returning KLOGers – Peter Kenyon & John Arkinstall – plus Frank McKenzie (KLOGs member visiting from Thailand), 2 new members (Edwin & Jarno) and guests (David S, James W & Helmut D) teed off on East 1 & 2 soon after 1pm. The course was in very good condition but very challenging; play was a bit slow but all groups finished before 6.30pm.

The weather was initially sunny & hot, then later became overcast and thundery but fortunately the threatening storm held off so all completed the full round.

The players then made their way to the Pantai Seafood restaurant where they were joined by Richard Moss, some taking much longer than others to arrive having chosen to ignore Waze !.

Good food was selected by El Pres accompanied by numerous bottles of beer, plus good wines provided by RICHARD RODWELL (our sponsor for the wine prize).

Results

The April medal winner by a clear margin was Tom Holmes, returning after a spell working offshore Sarawak (or so he says), with a score of 41 points (cut 5). Tied at 38 points so settled on count-back were Allan Wright (cut 2) & Paul Geddes (cut 1). Roger Surieux should have joined this illustrious pair, but entered 36 points on his card. The two new members (Jarno & Edwin) acquitted themselves well, finishing in 6th & 8th places respectively. (Jarno had even brought his fan club, consisting of James & Dan with him for the event).

Fines

One on-time honesty jug this month (Ray Funnell) plus 3 post-game – EL PRES for 2 balls & Dave Evans for 1 ball OB off tee. (Some people forgot that an OB ball off the tee is not considered to have passed the ladies tee and thus incurs a fine. This will be highlighted at future events).

May Away

El Pres noted that we currently have 16 people confirmed for the Chiang Mai Away in May, plus Dan Brod on Day 1 only; more are still welcome. Shirts will be available soon.

Commiserations

Sorry to report that Andrew Robinson will not be golfing for a while after breaking his leg; we wish him a speedy recovery.

October 2016 Game at Tropicana Golf & Country Resort

img_0315

Tropicana Golf & Country Resort was the venue for the October monthly game with 24 players registered for the day. The course was in great shape as always and the undulating, fast greens with multiple bunkers around most of the greens provided a testing challenge for all.

We played the East 1 and East 2 nines and after a prompt start at 1pm we were almost immediately stopped by the siren for rain/lightning. After about a 20 minute delay play resumed.

A notable mention should be made for Franz Hierz who probably chose the most dangerous place to wait out this delay …. directly next to 5 large metal conducting flag poles (should have been a COTD nomination)

img_0316

We must say a big thank you to Mahmud Mohamed (member at Tropicana) who helped us arrange and book the game.

Post game dinner and prize giving was held at Pantai Seafood Restaurant which is very close to the club.

Results

The monthly medal winner for October was Iain Wise, with a score of 93 for 41 points (cut 5). Runner up, on count back, was Bernie Schobert with a gross of 85 for 41 points (cut 2) with 3rd place being Ricardo Castro with 89 for 40 points (cut 1). Best gross of the day was Martin Walsh with an 84.

October Game at Tropicana

Scribe Report

Tropicana Golf & Country Resort

15th October 2014

KLOGS has not played at Tropicana for many years. The course was in excellent condition with very quick greens. Weplayed off the white tees since the course length exceeded 6,000 meter.

The weather did throw a spanner in the works when a heavy thunderstorm interrupted play and the siren went off. Luckily all flights had completed 9 holes. After one hour plus we were about to call it a day, when the weather cleared up and play resumed. The wet greens were much slower, which made some putting adjustments necessary.

18 members and 2 guests enjoyed this premier course. A few players did not finish the round and retired to the dinner venue early. Due to the rain interruption the last flights finished the round under floodlights, which was a new experience for some.

The results of the day are as follows:

  • 1st – Martin Walsh with 86 for 42 points (cut 6)
  • 2nd – Andrew Robinson 99 for 37 points (cut 2)
  • 3rd – Dan Brod 94 for 36 points (cut 1)
  • NTP front nine – (Martin Walsh) but being the winner the sleeve of balls went to Stuart Taylor
  • NTP back nine – (Martin Walsh) but being the winner the sleeve was thrown to a guest
  • Longest Drive – Geoff McLaws with an astounding 254 m
  • Lowest gross – Geoff McLaws 85
  • Last Birdie – Chong on 17th.

Most of us then joined the advance party at the Pantai Seafood Restaurant, which according to acting El Pres was only 10 minute away. The horrendous traffic jams used by the rain and the evening rush hours did delay our arrival a bit. The food was excellent and Moneybags was particularly pleased that no wine corkage had to be paid.

All in all we took a bit of a fina􀀃ncial hit on the day with the KLOGS kitty subsidising Food & Beverage. 􀀩􀁒􀁒􀁇􀀃􀁄􀁈􀁙􀁈􀁕􀁄􀁊􀁈Most will agree, that sometimes playing at top courses is worth a modest drain from􀁉􀁕􀁒􀁐 the healthy kitty.

EL Pres welcomed the􀁋􀁈 guests Rick Burnett and Chong WM who have now both played twice with KLOGS. As is customary our thanks goes to the sponsors Old Club House, Wines Direct and the Rainaissance Hotel KL.

The November Away in Phnom Phen now has 19.6 participants. The 0.6 being Ray Funnel, who will decide by weekend. This promises to be a great tour, with outstanding golf and many excellent French restaurants to choose from.

Screen Shot 2016-01-25 at 2.47.13 PM

Martin Walsh was presented with the October winners mug. The Scribe, having played the worst front nine in his life witnessed Martin’s skillful game. Martin will receive the Old Club House rescue wood voucher in due course.

Coming in 2nd place Andrew Robinson receives a bottle of fine red wine.

Dan Brod took 3rd place honours receiving a sleeve of balls.

COTD nominations:

  • Rick Brown for taking multiple shots out of a bunker without sucess
  • Klaus for shooting an incredibe 61 on the front nine
  • Geoff McLaws after birdiing the first hole, then blaming the caddie for his bogey and par on the next holes (Caddie abuse)

Geoff took the COTD honours.

The KLOGS 􀀧􀁈􀁆􀁈􀁐􀁅􀁈􀁕December monthly medal will be decided be before the Away.

In January 2015 the AGM will vote in a new committee. Please let Rick Brown know of your canditure for either El Pres, VP, Moneybags or Scribe.
