December 2021 Game – Templer Park Country Club

The final game of 2021 was held at the immaculate Templer Park Country Club.  20 players including 3 guests (Craig Schul, Erik Stoel, Sam Clark) teed-off soon after 8am with a 2 tee box start.   Although the course was not particularly busy, flights teeing-off from Hole #1 were badly held up over the whole round to the extent that some players abandoned !. The weather was initially sunny & hot with a cooling breeze springing up later with a threat of rain.

Eighteen of us then made our way to the Chalet Suisse restaurant in Ampang, where we were joined by various groupies (Barry Cousins, Richard Moss, Andrew Robinson, Berni Schobert & Ian Durant) and enjoyed a splendid 4-course meal, accompanied by numerous jugs of beer, good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prize); some even stayed on to try various shots.

Results

Only 4 players bettered or equaled their handicaps but the December medal winner was Julien Hodson-Walker with 81 for 45 (cut 9), returning after nearly 20 years absence & drinking from his 1999 mug !  Ricardo Castro was second with 82 for 41 (cut 2) with Helmut Dicknoether third with 95 for 36 (cut 1).   Andrew Chez had the lowest gross of 75 (with 38 points).

Full results below.

COTD

Although our Pres of Vice was expecting to be nominated (as usual), Allan (with 2 Ls) jumped in, with the only actual nomination (your scribe).   At the start of the meal, I introduced myself to my neighbour, Erik, who pointed out we had been playing together for 5 hours !

Needless to say, I won !

Fines

There were numerous fines this month.

July 2020 Game – Templer Park Country Club

The second post-MCO game of 2020 was held at the Templer Park Country Club with the arrangements being made from a very safe distance in Stonehaven in Scotland by El Pres (recently arrived in KL but in quarantine!)

IMG_9158

With most of the committee AWOL, Allan Wright was persuaded to come out of retirement to be the MC on the day, with your former scribe still unable to hand over his old role to our Australian committee member!

With an early morning start again, 22 eager players including 2 guests (Gerhard Burchhard & Jasmi Kamsar) teed-off ~8am with a 2 tee box start. The flights which started off #10 were held up throughout by a slow 4-ball in front but still finished at ~12.30pm, slightly behind the flights which started off #1. The weather was initially sunny but became overcast later, but the threatening rain held off, though the course was still very soggy from torrential overnight rain.

We then enjoyed a decent meal at the club, joined by various groupies (Barry Cousins, Richard Moss & Andrew Robinson,) accompanied by numerous jugs of beer, good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prize) and whisky, procured on our behalf by Andrew Robinson getting mates rates at the Annex. The day wrapped up for most ~ 2.30pm.

Results

With many players, including your scribe, struggling, only 4 players bettered their handicaps. The July medal winner, was David Cheung with an impressive 89 for 43; Ricardo Castro was second with 85 for 38 with Stan C third with 92 for 37. (Actually tied with our guest, Jasmi with 97 for 37). Andrew Chez won a consolation prize of a sleeve of balls for his lowest gross of 83.

Full results below.

KLOGS July results

  • NTP winner #2 : Tony Morris
  • NTP winner #8 : Clive Gordon
  • NTP winner #11 : Pietro Martucci
  • NTP winner #16 : Roland S
  • Last birdie : Enzo F

In Memoriam

Another sad event during the month was the passing of our friend and regular KLOGer Roger McGowan after a long battle with cancer. Whisky toasts were made and Andrew Barber gave a short speech in remembrance. A full obituary is posted at :

COTD

We had only 4 (rather tame) nominations this month for COTD.

1. Stan – for a late handicap adjustment, allowing him to steal 3rd place
2. Andrew Barber – for aiming for the bridge on the 4th hole, then landing on it
3. Ricardo – hunting for Martin in the shower !
4. Sigi – for responsibly picking up the longest drive tape measure & results sheet (when we didn’t have a longest drive !)

Sigi was unanimously voted COTD !

December 2019 Game – Templer Park Country Club

The final game of 2019 was held at the immaculate Templer Park Country Club.  22 players including our Honorary Octogenarian (Mike Smith) plus 6 guests (John Lee, Jay Schooley, Jasmi. Franz Hierz, David Ross & Jeff Lynch) teed-off slightly before 1pm with a 2 tee box start.   At that time, the course was almost empty so all flights made good time, with the first flight finishing at ~5pm. The weather was initially sunny & hot with a cooling breeze springing up later; then at ~ 5pm, as the first flights were finishing, a short but heavy rain shower started.  However, all flights completed the full 18 holes.

At the invitation of Hans & Berni, twenty of us then made our way to their Chalet Suisse restaurant in Ampang, where we were joined by various groupies (Barry Cousins, Richard Moss, Andrew Robinson, Pietro Martucci & Ian Durant) and enjoyed a splendid 4-course meal, accompanied by numerous jugs of beer, good wines provided by Ricardo Castro (our sponsor for the wine prize) and whisky provided by El Pres.  The evening wrapped up for most ~ 9.30pm.

Results

With many players struggling, only 4 players bettered or equaled their handicaps.  Since John Lee was a guest so could not qualify for the trophy, the December medal winner, crediting his good performance to jet lag, was Allan Wright with 99 for 37 (cut 4); Ricardo Castro was second on countback with 84 for 36 (cut 2) from Bernd Kaiser 98 for 36 (cut 1).   John Lee won a consolation prize of a sleeve of balls for his lowest gross of 86 (with 41 points) (Ricardo having won another prize).

June 2019 Game – Templer Park Golf & Country Club

Templer Park Scenic

Twenty Players teed off at Templer Park as we were back in Malaysia following last month excursion to Thailand for the May Away. As ever Templer Park was in very good condition as can be seen from Stuart’s excellent photographs. We were blessed with good playing conditions with the initial sunny skies clouding over and with a gentle breeze it made for very pleasant playing conditions. The course was relatively quiet and with a two-tee box start we got away before one o’clock and we all finished before 5-15pm.

Templer Park Scenic 3

It was good to welcome our 2 guests, Dave Higate playing his second game and Derren Simpson on his first, invited by Enzo. After the game we adjourned to Tang Dynasty Restoran for food and copious quantity of Carlsberg. We were joined for dinner by Richard Moss, John Arkinstall and Andrew Robinson.

Results

The June medal winner was Clive Gordon with a score of 85 for 40 points (cut 4) moving up from his second place in April. We had 4 players all vying for second each with 38 points. After analysis Paul came fifth, Geoff fourth. It took a back 6 countback to establish that EL PRES was second winning a bottle of wine (cut 2),  and Edwin third, a sleeve of balls (cut 1).   Lowest gross went to Geoff McLaws with 80 played off the blues, a sleeve of balls.

Full results below.

Screen Shot 2019-06-24 at 09.53.39

  • NTP winner #8 :  Enzo Filoni (14.8m) to be commended for holing the putt for 5 points
  • NTP winner #16 :  The man with no name at 1.8m was the closest – it was discovered by some sleuth-like detective work that this was Edwin, but as he was already in third place, it went to the next nearest, our other guest Dave Higate
  • Longest drive #5 :  This went to Lim Hong with a distance of 296 yds.
  •  Last birdie:  This went to our guest Derren Simpson with his birdie on the 18th.

COTD

We had 5 nominations this month for COTD.

  1. Edwin – for being the man with no name on hole 16 NTP and then blaming his flight partners for not putting his name on the record sheet.
  2. Robert – for complaining he had to walk too far, blaming everyone but himself for the fact his ball was always a long way from the buggy track.
  3. Paul – for leaving his range finder on the previous tee box.
  4. Clive- for allowing a monkey to steal his four iron.
  5. Geoff – for chasing the monkeys away by doing a gorilla impersonation aptly demonstrated by Martin.

Geoff was the unanimous winner.

Fines

Several honesty jugs this month, EL PRES then used some invention to fine all the Chickens for decling the across-the-water shot on the last, then fining those that were not chicken but not golfers as they failed to cross the water, the rest were also fined with the exception of the birdie man.

The next Away in November will be to Chiang Mai and will be between Monday 18th to Saturday 23 November; 4 rounds of gold Tuesday through Friday.

October 2018 Game – Templer Park Country Club

20181017_155433_resized

The October game was held at the immaculate Templer Park Country Club.  24 players including 7 guests (Adrian Skiba, Andrew McDonald, Jeffrey Brown, Chris Banton, Jan Van Driel, Paul Carpmael & Roland Steiner ) teed-off slightly before 1pm with a 2 tee box start.   At that time, the course was almost empty so all flights made good time, with the first flight finishing at ~5pm. The weather was sunny & hot with a cooling breeze springing up later; surprisingly there was no rain throughout the afternoon.

At the invitation of Hans & Berni, twenty of us then made our way to their Chalet Suisse restaurant in Ampang, where we were joined by ‘tour groupie’ Ian Durant and enjoyed a splendid 4-course meal, accompanied by numerous jugs of beer & good wines provided by Richard Rodwell (our sponsor for the wine prize).  The evening wrapped up for most ~ 9.30pm.

Results

With many players (including your scribe) struggling with their approach shots & putting, only 2 players bettered or equaled their handicaps.  The October medal winner, no doubt inspired by his recent visit to the Ryder Cup, was Martin Walsh with 89 for 37 (cut 4); Kaz Takita was second with 92 for 36 (cut 2) and third Iain Wise with 100 for 34 (cut 1).

Full results below.

June 2016 Game at Templer Park Country Resort

IMG_8361

There was heavy rain on the morning of our monthly game at Templer Park and after a slightly delayed and confused start 4 full flights got off on two tee boxes on a rather wet and heavy course. Confusion reigned at the start with mixed messages from El Pres, Moneybags combined with the usual officious starter’s instructions on which tee boxes the flights had to start on.

As transpired later there was also some confusion and mixed messages on whether we were were playing preferred lies on the day – our group played the ball as it lay whereas other groups were happily using the preferred lies rule.

The course, apart from being rather wet on the fairways and many bunkers being waterlogged, was in pretty good condition but these wet conditions made this tough course an even more arduous experience as reflected in the scores of the day.

Weather was hot and extremely humid with hardly a breath of wind. Luckily we had no more rain and we all finished by 5:30 to 6:00pm.

Post game dinner and prize giving was held in a private room at the club with self-ordered meals and numerous jugs of cold beer along with the usual wine from Richard Rodwell.

Results

As it was Ramadan and it was going to be difficult to get additional course marshals to assist in measurement of longest drive and NTP’s we just had 4 novelty prizes being the NTP’s on all of the Par 3’s using self measurement – tapes supplied for each group. Some tapes came back totally unused as some groups didn’t even make any of the greens!  It must also be said that a 25’ tape measure was somewhat optimistic in most cases and on a few greens it took multiple measurements with the tape at full stretch!

The monthly medal winner for June was none other than El Pres, Allan Wright, with a score of 105 for 31 points (cut 4). Runner up (on count back) was Richard Rodwell with a gross of 90 for 30 points (cut 2) with 3rd place Rick Brown with 106 for 30 points (cut 1). Best gross of the day went to Paul Geddes with 92 (Richard Rodwell got 2nd prize so couldn’t win the best gross).

IMG_8377

The NTP winners were as follows:

Hole 2 : Hans Bohi (4ft)

Hole 8 : Stan Constantinides (50ft)

Hole 11 : Stuart Taylor (37ft)

Hole 16 : Dan Brod (13ft)

COTD

We had a number of COTD nominations this month as follows:

  • Mike Smith for throwing his caddy off the buggy
  • Richard Rodwell for pulling out his driver on Hole 4 and stating he was “going to smoke the green” only to put it in the pond in front of the tee box
  • Frank Lucas (guest) for complaining about the group behind hitting the ball too close to him on 2 occasions when these shots were 30-40m away and nowhere near to him.
  • El Pres & Moneybags for the cock-up at the start
  • Iain Wise, Moneybags, for forgetting the monthly winners trophy

The vote was fairly obvious and Iain Wise was duly voted COTD.

Screen Shot 2015-12-11 at 1.31.55 PM

Nineteen Players turned up for the Christmas pantomime at Templer Park which in spite of recent heavy rain was in good condition. Five flights all started on hole one, the first flight being back in the hut in reasonable time, the later flights were not so fast. The threat of afternoon rain came and went so that we all avoided a soaking.  It was good to see some old faces back and also our guest Arthur Rodwell on his yearly pilgrimage to Malaysia.

The results of the day were as follows:

  • 1st – El Pres with a tremendous 83 for 40 points (cut 4) (he also won here in April with a similar stableford score
  • 2nd – Richard Rodwell 85 for 39 points (cut 2) who kindly donated his bottle of wine to the 2nd highest gross of the day Roger McGowan.
  • 3rd – Ron Linden 102 for 34 points (cut 1)
  • NTP front nine – A sleeve of balls went to Allan Wright
  • NTP back nine – A sleeve of balls went to Stuart Taylor
  • Longest Drive – a sleeve of balls to Richard Rodwell with a drive of 278 yards.
  • Lowest gross – a sleeve of balls to Geoff McLaws 86
  • Last Birdie – a sleeve of balls to Bernhard Romahn

Fines – Reasonable

Mike Smith a set of jugs, all for complaining about the food

After the game we went to Tang Dynasty  Restaurant on the way back into KL, 18 eventually making it. This once reliable restaurant has had a change of management and has gone downhill, the service was poor and the portions small. A new restaurant for this course needs to be found. Twelve bottles of wine were readily consumed along with numerous bottles of beer.

El Pres advised that the AGM would be held at KGSAAS on Wednesday 20th January 2016. He asked members to give some consideration to who would be COTY, a list of possible candidates to be issued shortly.

El Pres thanked our sponsors Old Club House, Wines Direct and the Renaissance Hotel KL.

COTD nominations:-

  • Mike Smith many sins including  –    Greeting Roger McGowan as though he would not survive the afternoon. For having 2 jugs For turning 77 For winning on the November away.
  • El Pres also many sins including : For not topping up his beer because he knew he was the day’s winner. For talking too fast
  • Paul Geddes for ordering lunch when it was already provided.
  • Stuart Taylor for teeing up his ball in the drop zone
  • Johann for knocking his putt 10ft past the hole and then blaming his caddy for not telling him it was down hill

The 2 leading contenders could not be separated despite the photo finish, so Co-COTD was awarded.

April 2015 Game at Templer Park

Scribe Report

Templer Park

Wednesday 15th April 2015

Bright & Breezy

IMG_3076_

Twenty Kloggers turned up to play at Templer Park which was in superb condition, initially under breezy conditions we commenced the round where we encountered lush fairways and superfast greens. The scoring was as ever for this venue not good, thank God we persuaded El Pres to retreat from his Nero like folly of making us play off the blue tees. With a two tee start we were all round in 4 1/2 hours, reasonable timing considering the severity of the course (It should be noted the course marshall thought otherwise).

Results

The results of the day were as follows:

  • 1st – El Pres 89 for 37 points (cut 4)
  • 2nd – Ray Funnell 94 for 35 points (cut 2)
  • 3rd – Paul Geddes 90 for 34 points (cut 1)
  • NTP front nine – A sleeve of balls went to Andrew Barber
  • NTP back nine – A sleeve of balls went to El Scribe
  • Longest Drive – Stuart Taylor 285 yards (dodgy tape measure!!!)
  • Lowest gross – Karl Muir 92
  • Last Birdie – Ooops El Pres forgot this (in his ardent quest for fines seems to have been overlooked)

Fines – Very Lucrative details as follow –

Roger McGowan no Kloggs shirt, four failures to pass the red tee box, Ray Funnell for leaving early to attend a meeting, Mike Smith and El Scribe forgetting to pay their caddy, several for chickening out on the 18th, several for discussing politics.

The full results are:

Screen Shot 2015-04-16 at 8.41.02 PM

After the game we journeyed to Tang Dynasty Restaurant on the way back into KL. After some delay 19 eventually made it. All present enjoyed a very good meal with the usual copious quantities of refreshments, on this occasion 32 bottles of tiger and 12 bottles of wine, you can hear Moneybags groaning again.

It should be noted that nearly half the score cards returned were incorrectly tallied. For the June game fines may be applied for scorecard misdemeanours.

El Pres gave an update that the May Away is confirmed to be held in Hua Hin Thailand, and he will issue the final costings in the next couple of days followed by collection of the dosh. El Pres thanked our sponsors Old Club House, Wines Direct and the Renaissance Hotel KL.

COTD Nominations

  • El Pres laid up putt on the par 3 eleventh, along with bribery on the 18th tee box almond sweets to playing partners.
  • Bernhard Romahn for a Double Rommel .on the 16th (Bunker to Bunker), spending 20 minutes looking for his ball and causing traffic chaos with the traffic light system on the 12th.
  • Stuart Taylor for searching everywhere for his car keys when all the time they were in his pocket.
  • Paul Geddes advising El Pres by text that he was running late due to an extended doctor’s appointment “I am coming ….  might be tight but I will come”.

The Desert Fox took the award by storm.

El Pres once again thanked Karl for his service to the society and rewarded him by bestowing him with life membership, Moneybag groaning again.

After the novelty prizes El Pres had the pleasure in presenting himself with the winner’s mug and swiftly downed his winner’s drink.

El Pres asked the group to consider occasionally paying increased game cost which would enable playing the better courses. El Pres auctioned off a fourball for Sungai Long, Paul Geddes paying 600 bucks for the privilege. El Pres thanked everyone and for those not going on the away hopes to see you all again for the June game.

March 2014 Game at Templer Park

Scribe Report

Templer Park Country Club

19th March 2014

IMG_7085Screen Shot 2016-01-25 at 5.07.54 PM

Since our last outing to Templer Park Country Club in October 2013 the renovation works to the clubhouse and more importantly to the golf course itself have resulted in a much improved venue. Buggy  tracks have been resurfaced, overgrown ponds have been cleared and general landscaping is visible everywhere. Those strange 4 person buggies used previously have been replaced with normal 2-man buggies. All this has returned TPCC to the ranks of first class courses in Malaysia and it will remain one of the more prestigious venues on our calendar. The rumoured closure of the adjacent Perangsan Templer course will probably make TPCC even more popular.

On the day, 20 KLOGS members and 3 guests enjoyed excellent weather and a course in superb condition. Tee-off from the white was on time on two tee boxes with no hold-ups during the game.

The difficulty of TPCC resulted in 40% of us (including your Scribe) not breaking 100. Could it be true that there are ghosts on this course as mentioned in some write-ups? One guardian on the 16 tee-box was prepared to defend his territory and it took some persuasion to get him to move. The yardage to the front of the greens except for the par 3s also contributed to leaving the ball short on the approaches. Those 60% who scored below 100 can be congratulated.

Screen Shot 2016-01-25 at 5.08.23 PM

The results of the day are as follows:

  • 1st – John Arkinstal with 94 for 40 points
  • 2nd – Robert Frager 86 for 38 points
  • 3rd – Andrew Robinson 99 for 36 (ocb)
  • NTP front nine – no one remebered
  • NTP back nine – Martin Walsh
  • Longest Drive – Bernie Schobert
  • Lowest gross – Robert Frager 86 (but the sleeve of balls went to Bernie with 87)
  • Last Birdie – Ron Linden

Screen Shot 2016-01-25 at 5.05.02 PM

In the absence of El Pres, VP Rick Brown welcomed the guests. He then proceeded to invent a new fine of RM 50 for those who chose the “chicken route” on the 18th i.e. not crossing the large pond. The prize giving went off smoothly with John Arkinstall receiving the customary pewter mug.

12 players have sofar committed to the May Away in Chiang Mai. The target is 16 so those who have not yet decided please do so asap.

Paul Geddes has completed 3 games with KLOGS and may now join at his own peril.

There were three COTD nominations:

· Paul Geddes in an Audi for attempting to ovetake Richard Rowells Porsche Cayman.

· Has Bohi for throwing his putter a fair distance

· Andrew Barber for not bring enough cash to pay for his honesty jug

Andrew received the COTD hounour.

Templer Park Country Club’s facilities are undergoing a massive upgrade. The lobby area, restaurant and changing-room are partially gutted and being remodelled. It is always good to see money being invested in a premier golf course.

Robert Frager suggested we should ask for a discount since he could not use the lobby area. That would have qualified for a COTD nomination however he had to leave early due to work commitments.

Templer Park Country Club is set amid the tranquil beauty of the surrounding Templer Park Forest Reserve, at the foothills of the majestic Bukit Takun limestone hill, which dominates the landscape. On the day of the KLOGS’ event we found a superbly maintained course with fast greens measuring 10.5 in the stimpmeter.

With initial 12 on the list, Bernie Shobert had to withdraw because of personal reasons and Jimmy Legget had a senior episode and forgot to show up.

Moneybags Andrew Robinson ensured a smooth registration but could not play due to some strange swelling on his elbow. There was some pointed banter about the cause of that swelling. Anyway a big thanks to Andrew for still carrying out his duties.

The remaining 10 players took to the course and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon, albeit rather humid and hot. El Pres decreed that we would play off the white tees and pick and place on the fairways. This proved to be a blessing to most since TPCC plays very long off the blue tees.

The submitted score cards and the key results were as follows:

  • WINNER – Tony Morris with a very good 88/42 and cut 6.
  • Runner-up – Klaus Kretzschmar 94/35 and cut 2.
  • Third-place – Glen Wombwell 105/34 and cut 1.
  • NTP front nine – Richard Rodwell
  • NTP back nine – Karl Muir
  • Longest Drive – John Arkinstall with 290 yards
  • Lowest gross – Tony Morris 88 (but he couldn’t win it because he already won something) Next was Klaus with 94 but he couldn’t win, then was El Pres with 94 same problem, now to Robert with 97 at last a winner!!! But bugger me see below if he didn’t get the last and only birdie so our ball sponsor got 6 of his own balls back!! I know keep those thoughts to yourself.
  • Last birdie – Robert Frager on hole 14 (sleeve of balls to be awarded later if anyone remembers) El Pres did remember and the balls all 6 of them were dutifully despatched to Robert courtesy our my despatch boy!

A party of 9 adjourned for dinner and festivities to the excellent Tang Dynasty Restaurant nearby and enjoyed a very good meal and drinks. Andrew arranged for the meal and again graced us with his presence.

El Pres confirmed the November Away will be to Siem Reap. There are still some slots to be filled. Simon will expect payment of RM 2,500 by the first week of November.

Moneybags collected a surprisingly high number of honesty jugs and El Pres then conducted a fund raising exercise by fining all those who had a practice round at TPCC on last Monday. Jimmy will be required to pay for usual fee of RM 220. This all resulted in a breakeven result for the day. Well done Moneybags!

The COTD nominations were rather thin due to exemplary behaviour on the course.

  • Nevertheless Karl was nominated, well just for the hell of it.
  • Richard for not passing the ladies tee on the first
  • After a lengthy discussion about the benefits of certain pharmaceutical products Richard claimed ignorance regarding an alternative to Sildenafil by the generic name Tadalafil which earned him a nomination.
  • Glen for considering a trip to the pharmacy before his wife’s birthday celebration.

Glen took the honours and downed the obligatory glass of beer.

Thank you to the sponsors being Ye Old Club House, Wines Direct and Robert Frager.
